Prathloons is the Chicago-based songwriting project of Collin Dall formed in 2018. Dall’s songwriting layers poetic, melancholic lyrics atop glacially paced arrangements on guitar, drums, piano, & violin. Their songs reminisce on the mess of getting old, the woes of life-long relationships, & accepting that the meaning of our time on earth is simpler than we think: to love and listen, and to hope for the same in return. With his new album Breadbox, Dall departs from the anxious urgency of his emo-adjacent previous works, patiently penning each song’s lyrics as an open letter to his loved ones. He arranges the instrumentation slower & sparser than before; marking new longform territory for Dall’s songwriting. Borrowing from the molasses-paced musical cues of late nineties guitar bands (e.g. Low, Death Cab for Cutie), Prathloons lives in the starts & stops of a softly plucked guitar string, or the heart-beating thud of a floor tom. The melancholy of legacy slowcore acts marries with atmospheric contemporaries (e.g. Horse Jumper of Love, Big Thief) during the band’s most focused & meditative moments. Breadbox’ 39-minute runtime exemplifies Dall and his band’s wide open, sparse, and emotional songs at their most soft, raw core.
